The bare words “I have a dream” or “let freedom ring” are enough to bring upon anyone a rush of complex ideas and emotions about civil rights, justice, and equality. Dr. King’s two iconic phrases help a vast amount of intricate and historical information to imprint on and permeate our brains. The Block phrases have become Icons that can bring to mind not only the singular cadences of the preacher’s speech but also the entire history of the civil rights movement.

Your short statement Block phrase, like a pack mule, will carry a world of complexity, if it is instantly perceivable and repeated with emotional intent.

Whereas King used Blocks as an anthem for peace, on the other side of the Atlantic, just over two decades earlier, an English statesman aroused an entire nation to rise up in the midst of wartime desperation. On June 4, 1940, British prime minister Winston Churchill spoke to the House of Commons in an effort to rally support for the war against the Nazis. Wittingly or not, he used Blocks and delivered what many believe was the most powerful speech of his career. The famous closing lines went like this:

We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.
